Most of the Mahayana Sutras were written between 100 BCE and 200 CE. The authorship for most is unknown. Different schools of Mahayana Buddhism emphasize different Sutras.

The sutras survived through Chinese and Tibetan translations. In spite of questionable provenance, the Mahayana sutras contain some of the most profound and beautiful passages of the world's religious literature.
